Povidone iodine is a complex of iodine with povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone), whereas povidone is a synthetic hydrophilic polymer that acts as an iodine carrier. This polymer does not exert antibacterial action, but has a high proximity to the cell membrane, and in the form of a complex with iodine, ie in the form of povidone iodine, releases free iodine directly on the surface of the bacterial cell.
