Butyric acid, present in small amounts in whole milk, is a four-carbon carboxylic acid also referred to as a short-chain fatty acid. Butyrate, a dissociated form of butyric acid, carries out its physiological actions mainly in the intestine, particularly in the colon. It represents the most important energy source (nutritional) of colonocytes, cells that form the epithelial tissue of the colon. Butyric acid is, therefore, a fundamental nutrient for the human body, and its main source derives from the fermentation processes of the fibers taken with the diet by the intestinal flora. The activities that butyric acid carries out at the physiological level are:

intestinal trophic action, as it promotes colon re-epilation by stimulating the turnover, differentiation, and maturation of colonocytes.

it contributes to maintaining the integrity of the intestinal mucosa and to the repair of lesions.

promotes the absorption of water and sodium in the intestine; therefore, in case of diarrhea, it speeds up the physiological rebalancing of intestinal transit.

helps to rebalance the normal intestinal pH.

Inulin, a fiber in many plant-based foods, is prebiotic and promotes the intestinal flora's microbial growth. It represents the starting substrate from which probiotics with fermentation produce short-chain fats, including butyric acid.

When to use it

Novocol can be used in all cases where it is necessary to rebalance the intestinal mucosa:
