GGT

Gamaglutamyl transferase (GGT or gamma GT) is an enzyme whose main function is transport, carrying several molecules inside the body; in particular it plays a significant role in helping the liver metabolize drugs and other toxins.

It is therefore more concentrated in the liver, but can also be found in the gallbladder, spleen, pancreas and kidneys.

If taken individually a high value may indicate a liver damage but does not indicate the condition that the damage may have caused; therefore measurement of GT range in the blood is required along with other liver enzymes, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), ALP and bilirubin. Its dose is determined in the laboratory through a blood sample.
